How do electric bikes work?
Every e-bike motor system we have installed on our Raleigh bikes has a different pedal assist, but they all work very similarly overall. All of our e-bikes are pedal operated. When you start pedalling, the motor kicks in because it triggers sensors placed on the bike; this can be found in various places on each of the different systems. Electric bikes can have three types of sensors, speed, cadence and torque. Every e-bike will have a selection of sensors that best suit the type of bike and what it will be used for. The battery on an e-bike provides continuous power to the motor.
How do e-bike controllers work?
Not all e-bikes have the same motor system, which means they have different controllers. Although they look different, they all have the same main function of turning the system on and off and setting the level of motion assist.
Do you still have to ride an electric bike?
Yes. Under UK law, all e-bikes must use pedal power to work. You can read more about it on our e-bike regulations page. That’s why we think e-bikes are still a workout and you still need to put in some pedal power!

How to optimize the distance traveled by an electric bike?
Here are some tips and tricks to help the range your bike will take you.
Cadence: Slow pedaling consumes energy, while maintaining a cadence above 50 rpm optimizes your drive unit.
Weight: Less luggage will reduce the overall weight of the bike, allowing your e-bike to run longer.
